Subordinating Conjunctions

पहिल्या गटामधील Adverb Clause of Condition च्या Subordinating Clause ची सुरूवात नेहमी पुढीलपैकी एखाद्या Subordinating Conjunction ने केलेली असते.

if (इफ)
जर...तर
whether (व्हेदर)
होय किंवा नाही असा अर्थ
unless (अन्लेस्)
शिवाय, खेरीज

नियम १

unless चा Subordinating Clause

ज्या Subordinating Clause ची सुरुवात unless या Subordinating Conjunction ने केलेली असते, तो Subordinating Clause नेहमी Adverb Clause of Condition असतो.

नियम २

on condition that चा Subordinating Clause

on condition that या तीन शब्दांच्या समूहाला Subordinating Conjunctional Phrase (सबॉर्डिनेटिंग् कंजंक्शनल् फ्रेज्) असे म्हणतात.

ज्या Subordinating Clause ची सुरुवात on condition that ने केलेली असते, तो Subordinating Clause नेहमी Adverb Clause of Condition असतो.

if किंवा whether चा Subordinating Clause

नियम ३

if किंवा whether पासून सुरू झालेला Subordinating Clause हा एकतर Noun Clause as Object of Verb असतो किंवा Noun Clause as Subject of Verb असतो किंवा Adverb Clause of Reason असू शकतो.

नियम ४

Noun Clause as Object of Verb

if किंवा whether ने सुरु झालेला Subordinating Clause जर Main Clause मधील Transitive Verb ला जोडलेला असेल, तर हा Subordinating Clause नेहमी Noun Clause as Object of Verb समजावा.

परंतु, if किंवा whether ने सुरु झालेला Subordinating Clause जर Main Clause मधील Intransitive Verb ला जोडलेला असेल, तर हा Subordinating Clause नेहमी Adverb Clause of Reason समजावा.

नियम ४

Noun Clause as Subject of Verb

वाक्याची सुरूवात जेव्हा if किंवा whether च्या Subordinating Clause ने केलेली असते आणि त्याला जोडून Main Clause मध्ये is, was, look, seem, appear, make, become यांपैकी एखादे Verb वापरलेले असते, तेव्हा हा Subordinating Clause नेहमी Noun Clause as Subject of Verb समजावा.

परंतु, Main Clause मध्ये वरीलपैकी कोणतेही Verb वापरलेले नसेल, तर हा Subordinating Clause नेहमी Adverb Clause of Condition समजावा.

Ex. 1
  • If I like it, I shall buy it.
  • Main Clause :
    I shall buy it
  • Subordinate Clause :
    If I like it
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb shall buy in the Main Clause.
Ex. 2
  • If it rains, we shall stay at home.
  • Main Clause :
    we shall stay at home
  • Subordinate Clause :
    If it rains
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb shall stay in the Main Clause.
Ex. 3
  • You must go whether you hear from him or not.
  • Main Clause :
    You must go
  • Subordinate Clause :
    whether you hear from him or not
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb must go in the Main Clause.
Ex. 4
  • It makes little difference to me whether you accompany me or not.
  • Main Clause :
    It makes little difference to me
  • Subordinate Clause :
    whether you accompany me or not
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb makes in the Main Clause.
Ex. 5
  • Unless you work harder, you will fail.
  • Main Clause :
    you will fail
  • Subordinate Clause :
    unless you work harder
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb will fail in the Main Clause.
Ex. 6
  • I shall not pay it unless he sends me the bill again.
  • Main Clause :
    I shall not pay it
  • Subordinate Clause :
    unless he sends me the bill again
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb shall pay in the Main Clause.
Ex. 7
  • I will forgive you on condition that you do not repeat the offense.
  • Main Clause :
    I will forgive you
  • Subordinate Clause :
    on condition that you do not repeat the offense
  • Adverb clause of condition modifying the verb will forgive in the Main Clause.
